This remarkable place is designed in 1666, and the construction of the Kalpitiya Dutch Fort In Sri Lanka was completed in year of 1676.
Kalpitiya Fort was the entry point to the Puththalam Lagoon, therefore it was the key in the trade of cinnamon related to the Dutch East India Company. This Dutch Fort has only one entrance, which face the beautyful lagoon of Puththalam. The pediment is in the shape of a pandol with the belfry at the top. The voc emblem had a great meaning and preserved takes a while to actually see.
The two elephants represent strength and the palm tree depi cts the fertility of the area/region. When entering for this fort, one would be met with a large wall, this was a great technique in security mechanism. So that intruders would not be able to entrance arch is having a huge influence of Holland architecture.
The layout it self is very beautiful, attractive and simple. The fort has four bastions with the two on the lagoon and two on the land side. The fort wall s are very unique, constructed using corals and limestone from the sea and sand and soil from the land. Dutch Fort is one of top of most eye catch place in Sri Lanka, And also has a great attention of tourist.
The old buildings are at the fringe creating an empty space at the middle of the Fort. Some parts of the building that remain one similar to a church. However there are the remains of a beautiful church, which had been built by the porthuguese. Some features of these buildings shows actual living home areas. As an example living room and dining halls for the inhabitants of the Fort.
The fort if canon of the fort shows the strategies that the dutch were planned to face any enemy a hack where canon fire would be used. most of the places in the first were built as inclined plans. These stops make any type of attack more complicated and difficult. They used some other tack ticks like pouring of hot water or a advance form of chemicals for enemies. There was two secret tunnels, one led to the sea, wile the other to the Dutch Reform Church. Today, These tunnels are blocked and cannot be used.
Arches and massive door lays are some features of Dutch architecture which were clearly shown by this Fort. Most of the features can be seen even from modern architecture in Sri Lanka. Influence of Dutch architecture is very impressive and attractive for Sri Lanka. And also Dutch peoples thought many more facilities in these building like good ventilate, protective storage, good storage rooms for their spices, pearls and cinnamon and much more.
